Challenge #22 – Light Through Trees

Hello Everyone!

Thank you so much for all the fabulous entries for the PORTRAITS challenge. You all did a fantastic job! I was so excited to see all the amazing entries last month.

You can find out who won here, and be sure to see the entries in the gallery here

This month we want you to imagine how light would be streaming through trees. You may want to add your light source from behind and have your cast shadows coming forward like jennifer has done, or you might like to place your light source high in the sky and imagine how the leaves will be blocking it on the ground, just allowing enough to get through to light up certain areas.

Or you might imagine it is a misty day and you can just capture the rays of light, shining down onto the ground. This is such a great challenge to experiment with light. We really hope you will give it a try. Even if it seems a little scary, it’s challenges like these that really help you to get out of your comfort zone and expand your skills.

Look how the sun behind this fig tree shines and casts a shadow.

Although the techniques are different when painting, in this video, Kevin shows how you may think about creating a scene using rays of light. Things to notice are how dark his trees are to help with the contrast of the light in the background. Also notice how he has added dark shrubs on the right hand side in the background to really accentuate the light on the left.

Then notice how he has added highlights to the leaves and the grass where the light would be shining on them.

You could use a white opaque pen to create the highlights on your scene, just like Nicoletta has in her example.

In this video the illustrator is using a darker paper and layering pencils to build up the scene. I love how she is using a reference photo to help her as she decides which colours to use.
Remember you are allowed to use a reference photo when you are studying and learning. Always reference your sources if it is not a photo you have taken yourself, and don’t claim the work as an original.
